In these mittens, the inspiration comes from the runestone ornamentation. The runestones were not gravestones, but memorials, and sometimes a runestone would be erected as a memorial to dead men.
In Sweden today there are approximately 2500 preserved runestones, and they are often found near roads and communication routes.
